In a groundbreaking initiative to promote linguistic diversity and cultural preservation, Amara.org is excited to announce a collaboration with Indigenous Community Television Australia (ICTV).
Using Amara’s innovative Editor Integration solution, our award-winning subtitle editor is embedded in ICTV Play, an online community for sharing and accessing media made by and for Indigenous people in remote Australia.
This partnership empowers creators and their followers on ICTV Play to create subtitles and translations in Indigenous languages, fostering greater accessibility and preserving these rich cultural heritages. Working together, Amara.org and ICTV play a crucial role in promoting and maintaining linguistic diversity, particularly for minority languages, by making content more accessible and inclusive.
Bridging Gaps Through Technology
Indigenous languages worldwide are under constant threat of extinction, with many communities struggling to preserve their linguistic heritage amid the pressures of globalization.
Australia in particular contends with one of the fastest rates of Indigenous language decline around the globe. According to the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), before colonisation, there were over 250 Indigenous languages spoken in Australia. In 2016 it was recorded that 120 Indigenous languages were spoken. 90% are considered endangered in 2019.
One powerful yet often overlooked tool in the endeavor to combat the decline is the use of captions and subtitles in media. The partnership between Amara.org and ICTV is a direct response to this challenge. By providing an intuitive editor for subtitle creation, Amara.org equips creators with the tools needed to make Indigenous content accessible to a broader audience, both within and outside of their communities.
ICTV, dedicated to sharing Indigenous stories and voices through video, has long been a cornerstone for cultural storytelling in Australia. Its platform broadcasts content created by and for Indigenous Australians, highlighting their languages, cultures, and lived experiences. Amara’s collaboration amplifies ICTV’s mission by enabling multilingual accessibility, a vital step in safeguarding these languages for future generations.
Partnerships like Amara.org and ICTV’s prove that technology and storytelling can go hand in hand to drive cultural preservation.
How the Collaboration Works
Amara.org’s inventive Editor Integration solution integrates our award-winning editor directly into ICTV Play’s platform, allowing creators and their collaborators to create, edit, and translate subtitles without ever leaving the site.
By integrating Amara’s subtitle editor into ICTV Play’s workflows, the partnership provides Indigenous creators with the ability to:
- Generate Subtitles in Indigenous Languages: Empowering creators to provide accurate, context-rich captions that reflect the nuances of their language and culture.
- Increase Accessibility: Subtitles and translations make content accessible to those who are hearing impaired or who speak other languages, including English.
- Preserve and Revitalize Languages: As more content is created in Indigenous languages, these resources become invaluable for educational and cultural preservation efforts.
In preparation for the Editor Integration solution on ICTV Play, Amara.org added 32 Indigenous languages to our platform – with more to come!
Vito Lucarelli, Station Manager at Indigenous Community Television Limited, says, “This update will allow ICTV to progress without prioritising English subtitles. Before this development, our contributors would have had to have their captions ‘burned-in’ to the media if they wanted to provide English subtitles. Now they can provide their English subtitles separately through the Amara Editor and viewers aren’t forced to watch with English subtitles.”
Impact on Indigenous Communities
This initiative holds transformative potential for Indigenous communities. By making cultural content accessible in native languages, it fosters pride, identity, and continuity within these communities. Furthermore, it brings Indigenous languages to a global stage, allowing people from diverse backgrounds to engage with these cultures respectfully and meaningfully.
Amara’s Editor Integration with ICTV Play ensures that these tools are accessible to everyone, removing barriers that often limit participation in such initiatives. For ICTV, this means empowering Indigenous storytellers to own their narratives and ensure they are told in their own voices and languages.
Vito Lucarelli adds, “I’m also a fan of this update as it promotes Indigenous language literacy. Many Indigenous languages are taught orally. Indigenous language videos with same-language subtitles will be valuable resources for communities.”
The Editor Integration solution has been made possible for ICTV thanks to funding from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA) and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) (see below for more NIAA resources).
Looking Ahead
This collaboration highlights the power of storytelling, technology, and community-driven efforts in preserving the world’s linguistic diversity.
Both Amara.org and ICTV recognize the need for urgent action to protect and promote Indigenous languages, and envision a future where Indigenous languages thrive in the digital age. By leveraging technology to support linguistic and cultural preservation, this initiative sets a powerful precedent for similar collaborations worldwide.
As the collaboration unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the vital role language plays in shaping identity and community. Together, Amara.org and ICTV are proving that innovation and tradition can coexist, creating pathways for a more inclusive and culturally enriched digital landscape.
